Your Ohio Mailing Address Isn’t Your School Assignment
You can love a house, recognize the mailing city, and still be wrong about the school assignment. That is a preventable mistake. Before making an offer in Central Ohio, confirm the exact property with the school district rather than treating a town name in a listing as an enrollment guarantee.
Myth: The Mailing City Settles It
A mailing address is a postal identifier. It is not a substitute for district enrollment verification. New Albany-Plain Local Schools specifically tells buyers of property in Plain Township to verify their address with the registrar before signing purchase agreements. Make that same address-first check wherever you search.
Myth: The Listing Has Already Done the Research
A listing's school fields are a useful lead, but buyers should verify them independently. Search the property on the county auditor's site, record the parcel number and listed district, and contact the district enrollment office with the full address. If records disagree, get the disagreement resolved before relying on either one.
Myth: Confirming the District Confirms the Building Forever
The school district and a particular grade-level building are separate questions. Ask which building currently serves the address, what applies for your intended enrollment year, and whether the district has adopted changes. An attendance reassignment inside a district does not necessarily change the district itself. Do not treat every discussion of redistricting as an approved boundary change.
The Questions to Send Enrollment
Ask: Is this exact parcel in your district? Which school serves the student's grade for the relevant school year? What residency documentation is required? Are there adopted changes that affect the address, and when do they take effect? If you are buying new construction, include the lot or parcel information so the office can identify a property that may not yet appear consistently in address databases.
Keep Ratings in Their Proper Place
Once the assignment is confirmed, review the Ohio School Report Card for that building and district, noting the reporting year. Then ask about the programs and services you want to understand. A district average is not the same as a building result, and neither replaces a direct conversation about enrollment and available programming.
Save the Evidence
Keep the parcel record, date of your inquiry, district response, and any referenced map or adopted plan with your transaction documents. Recheck if the address, grade, closing timeline, or announced assignment changes. For unresolved enrollment or legal questions, consult the district and an appropriate attorney.
Make This an Early Step
Do the school check while a property is still a candidate. Discovering a mismatch after you have arranged a move is much harder than eliminating an incorrect assumption before an offer. I can help gather property information; the district is the source for its enrollment determination.
